Friulian Son is the first in a series of books about two extraordinary heroes whose lives intertwine to fight monsters in plain sight. The book is chock-full of history, horror, humor, hanky-panky, hypotheses, and high stakes. The first unlikely hero is George Fiori, a Friulian-born, young man whose forefather was a master swordsman. George is not only a martial arts expert but is clairvoyant and has the ability to see the good and evil in each one of us. The other lead character is Saga Gunderson, who is a force to be reckoned with. She is a Swedish Armed Forces (Försvarsmakten) master in explosives and weaponry. Pretty much anything is a weapon to Saga, including harmless everyday objects such as a spoon, a flower, dental floss, a saltshaker, or even a vacuum cleaner (dammsugaren). The monsters include some familiar creatures of lore, and new creatures that will keep you on the edge of each page. The monsters featured in the first book include a pack of biker werewolves from Vermont, the Nahant sea monster, and a human/cuttlefish hybrid creature that lurks in the subway, paralyzes its victims with blue venom, and feasts on their brains for sustenance. Each new book in the series will feature two to four new creatures to chill readers to the bone and make you question what is real and what is fiction.

The Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Northern Italy has a rich blend of cultures and religious faiths. Because of its blend of cultures, it was home to some of the most interesting mythical creatures from the Middle Ages to earlier in the fourteenth century, including -- but not limited to -- elves (Sanguanelo), mountain dragons (Tatzelwurm), witches (Smara, Befana), human-faced squirrels (Squascs), sea monsters (Lariosauro), a legendary goat (Dahu), and werewolves (Lupo Mannaro). Many of these mythical creatures, which still exist today, were pushed out of Italy because things that go bump in the night did not fit in well with the doctrine of the Catholic Church. These monsters, once hidden, are now in plain sight and George and Saga will have many encounters with these mythical creatures and de novo monsters invented by the author in future books.
